Injection Molding of Liquid Silicone Rubber

Datwyler manufactures a wide range of quality near-flashless moulded silicone components and silicone over-molded assemblies using the liquid silicone injection moulding technique. There are many benefits to liquid silicone injection moulding (LIM / LSR) when it is used in high volume, tight tolerance, or over-molding applications. When making HCR silicone, the LIM process can be more automated, have better control over flash/waste, and have shorter cycle times.

Liquid Injection Molded Silicone (LIM) Process Description:

People who make things with liquid silicone start with a two-part liquid silicone compound formula (A and B parts). They mix them together at a certain ratio, usually 1:1, and pump them into a static mixer through a hydraulic or pneumatic metered pumping system. In order for the platinum-curing mechanism of the compound to work, the static mixer has to mix the two parts together. The static mixer sends the liquid silicone to the injection unit. LSR material is then poured into the mould cavity through a runner and gate system. It is kept there under high pressure and at a high temperature until it hardens, which takes a long time (rubber is vulcanized). The cycle time is set so that the best level of cure can be achieved at the end. Pieces are taken out of the cavities at the end of the cycle, and the next cycle starts.

Liquid Injection Molding (LIM)Steps:

  1. Two-part liquid silicone is fed to a static mixer from material drums.
  2. The two components are mixed together in a static mixer to create a homogeneous suspension.
  3. Material is injected into cavities via the runner system and gates from the injection unit.
  4. To achieve the best cure, the mould must remain closed under pressure and temperature.
  5. The parts are removed from the mould, and the process can now resume.

Advantages of Liquid Injection Molding (LIM):

  • Less time to cure than typical compression moulding
  • High repeatability, which is ideal for precision components with tight tolerances.
  • Material may be tinted in-line with material flow to make colours, and it has superior clarity.
  • Closed mould injection allows for complicated shapes to be moulded as well as over-molding.

Disadvantages of Injection Molding vs. other rubber molding methods:

  • Higher start-up and shut-down costs, making it better suited to high-volume applications.
  • When cold runner systems or other low waste options are not used, runner systems might result in increased gross material weights.
